Broodmare Care

Writer: danikamalyshdanikamalysh

Our broodmares have the joy of being able to be free and wild and as close to nature as possible. This doesn’t mean they are neglected in anyway. Our broodmares are the foundation of our program. They get the best care we can give them without getting to crazy and wrapping them in bubble wrap. What does this look like?

First and Most importantly feed and Nutrition. When you buy an equine raised by us you can rest assured that that horse was cared for right from the moment of conception in its mother’s womb. Allowing them to grow and develop to their full potential right from the start.

Our mares are on free choice Omneity mineral from Mad Barn. A complete organic trace mineral supplement, b vitamins, biotin, digestive enzymes and amino acids.

They are on free choice low sugar hay or grass depending on the time of the year.

They run on pastures 20-100acres in size. The 20 acre pasture is the smallest being the foaling pasture it’s conveniently located right across from our house so we can easily check around the clock.

When they aren’t foaling they are moving up mountains and hills on varied terrain.

When they are grazing we rotate them regularly from pasture to pasture. Managing the grass we have is so important for the well being of the mares and the environment.

They get their teeth checked yearly and floated if necessary. We believe in keeping them utd with vaccines and worming once a year.

They are on a regular trimming schedule every 6weeks. That being said we do have a couple older broodmares that had never been trimmed for the first 16years of their life and they look after their feet on their own we weren’t about to change that. They put excellent foals on the ground and that’s just how our agreement goes with them.

We keep things simple and give them the best care possible, keeping it low stress, high quality and natural as God intended.
